CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Brienne of Tarth
SERIES: A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones
CANON POINT: After fighting and killing the Mummers during A Feast for Crows
LOSS: Brienne's loss will be the memories of the weapons instructor who taught her to use a sword. She will retain what knowledge he gave her, the lessons that she learned from him and how to fight - but he was one of the few people to treat her kindly growing up and considered her the same as any one of his male students and this, the name and the face will not be known to her.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:

Brienne of Tarth is the daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth - his only daughter. Her older brother drowned when she was four and he, eight and her sisters died in the craddle. Her mother has long since passed leaving only her and her father and the women that he would entertain. She grew up without strong positive females in her life - given her septa (think a teacher or caretaker) was unkind to her. At first glance it is easy to see how different brienne is from most other highborn ladies. There are no frilly or lacy dresses or ornate jewels. no talk or dreams of being a wife to some great lord. Instead of dresses she prefers armor. Instead of jewels she prefers a sword. And in place of dreams of being married she wants to become a knight.

Perhaps it is because of her looks. The nickname Brienne "The Beauty" is not a kind one, it is given to her mockingly. At more than six feet tall and broad shouldered and muscular with a face that is to most considered ugly or homely that she chose this path. After all nobody would jape or mock her with a sword in hand when they saw or faced her in combat. But maybe it was just something that came naturally to her. She is large but not clumsy. Graceful, even. Strong and quick and light on her feet despite her large size. It may have also had to do with Renly Baratheon and the night she danced with him on his name day when he came to her father's hall for a party in his honor. She has had an unfortunate love for him ever since, and when she is able to and he calls himself king, she goes to fight for him and earn a place on his guard.

Brienne is very idealistic about honor andy virtue. She grew up with tales of valour and courage and chivalry. It is another example of her naitivity and understanding of the world around her. She has never known war, death or battle beyond what stories she grew up hearing. So it it is a surprise for her to discover that knights are not like the stories. In King Renly's camp she is mocked still but they also play a cruel game in the form of a wager to see who can claim her first.

Then there is Ser Jaime the Kingslayer who killed the king he was sworn to protect. It is a long road to understanding him and realising that the world does not work that way. When she is first introduced she is trusting of people and their word. Catelyn Stark admires her for her trusting nature, but as she spends more and more time on the road and after her and Jaime's capture this changes. Her own oaths to Renly who she would lay down her life for as a member of his guard while he yet lived, and to Lady Catelyn Stark are important to her. After Catelyn's death she continues to persue her word to her - to find Sansa Stark and restore her and Jaime's honor.

As far as people who are important to her he is probably one of the most and probably the most confusing. She over time in knowing him goes from being at his throat - their fight in the woods, to him basically saving her from rape by the Bloody Mummers, caring for him after he loses his hand and then when he could have rode off to save himself throwing himself into a bear pit without a sword to save her.

Of trust it is hard tor her to trust personally when it comes to things that can hurt her. Underneath a hard and cool exterior she is fragile and sensitive which stems from years of verbal abuse and mockery. She does not allow this to show, she has learned to hide or ignore whatever hurts bestowed on her else be considered weak. At a young age she was told that she would find that any male who showed interest or kindness was only interested for the lands and money they could claim in marrying a daughter of a lord, a highborn woman and all she needed to do was look in a mirror to find this truth. There is also the matter of being a woman among a world of men as she travels in a place where it is not safe for women to be without being raped or murdered or both. When indoors, a locked door separates herself from anyone else and she has trained herself to wake easily.

It is a hard lesson to learn but it helps keep out all things that can hurt her. Men and friendships. The men in the camp, which turns out for the better to her. Hence she is labelled as hard and cold. Aloof. Catelyn Stark describes her as someone with "walls higher than Winterfell's". Or to some, slow and simple. But she remains quiet, usually speaking only when spoken to for the most part.

While she is sometimes a little less than understanding she is still young. Often her own soft nature will take hold - stopping to bury the bodies of the dead women that she, Jaime and Cleos come across which nearly gets them captured right then and there. Her mistakes are far more of this nature than a lack of intelligence. This part of her too becomes harder, as just as the point she arrives from she will have killed three men, the first kills she has ever made, ones that threatened to rape her and took Jaime's hand during their captivity. Perhaps her biggest flaw is her insecurity, not her appearance. Being told that she will fail in her search to find Sansa Stark. But she is nothing if not stubborn to a point that will likely get her killed, determined and above all - loyal to those that she deems fit.

Brienne is not sure what she sees for herself. When her father tries to marry her off - she takes up a sword and challenges her supposed suitor, a knight more than three times her age who tells her that she will do as he says or he would punish her so she would have to act a proper lady. She tells him that she will only do so if he can beat her in a fight. Even with a tourney sword, she breaks his collarbone and ribs and the engagement.

As the only child of a lord it is not considered proper of her and sometimes this makes her sad to know that her father will not get a heir from her and that she cant make her father happy in that way, after how understanding he is of her. At the same time it is a relief as marriage is not something she is certain she wants and she is glad she does not have to carry that weight and pressure of marriage and children on her own. She is told time and again from others what they would do with a daughter like her and how they pity her father. And while she would like to be accepted, she does not know how. She is not feminine enough to sit at court with other ladies and behave as they should but then she is not accepted by other men and knights because of her being a woman, they find her a bit of a joke.  She wants to a chance to prove herself and be a part of a cause that she finds worthwhile.

ABILITIES: Brienne is a highly skilled warrior and excellent with a sword. She is agile, quick on her feet and strong. She held her own versus the knights in a melee tournament, besting the incredibly skilled Loras Tyrell - the Knight of Flowers and evenly matched Jaime Lannister during a fight. She has no supernatural skills or abilities, however.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

The blade in her hand was still new to her, unfamiliar yet the only sign that this blade was not meant for her were the gold, gleaming lions on the pommel, the glittering gems. Everything from the way it felt in her hand to the fact that it felt an extension of her own arm. It cut through the air with another swift strike to land in the soft wood of the outdoor post.

It had been given to her, though. To find Sansa Stark, from Jaime. Not that he currently remembered this. He entrusted her to find the girl for their honor and it was looking less and less like she would be finding her anytime soon. Not while here, at least. Seeing as they were so currently very stuck, though... she pulled Oathkeeper from the wood, pausing to admire the fine steel. She had scarce looked at it until now, only briefly before her fight in the woods. The evidence of that fight - the blood that had stained it had been wiped away until it was once again gleaming.

Someone had told her that keeping it so, treating it as if it were a knight's true companion and caring for it in such a way was as important as the blade itself.

Brienne stopped, arm falling to her side. It was difficult, to be stuck here still when she needed to be back. She needed very much to go back and continue her search. She missed the small, awkward squire she had acquired, and the calm of the castle, sleeping indoors wore on her even now. Oathkeeper now back in it's sheath, she could only hope that one day it would be used for more than simple practice against trees.

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:

[when the device is turned on you are greeted by a girl, all solemn expression and looking as if she had spent the last few weeks sleeping on the ground. rumpled clothing, long and unbrushed straw hair and a cut high across the side of her face. like she had been fighting.]

I am to understand that this small box is a means of communication, one of the ladies of the castle explained it even if the means of how it works... I do not really understand. but it should be that someone can hear me? I heard speaking from it not long ago.

[frowns, it's not difficult to see how uncomfortable she looks.] I wonder. this may not be where I was, according to the woman. I do not even know the name of the realm - but perhaps somebody here has seen agirl about the age of four and ten? pretty, with auburn hair? our father would very much like to know that she is safe, I have been looking for her for so long now... and am so very worried for her. [it's a lie, it had not helped her find the girl before, but maybe she would be so lucky to find her and be able to return her to safety.]

thank you.

INTENT: This is a character who I find incredibly interesting, I admire her strength and courage and determination. Yes, I love this character because no matter what happens she keeps on going. No I do not have intentions of shipping her with Jaime should she get in, she would probably kill him first. In fact she gets scoffy when I so much as think of it, even jokingly. I am interested to see how she would do in such a different setting.

In Character Information

character name: Ianto Jones
Fandom: Torchwood
Timeline: post Children of Earth Day Four - directly after the thing that happens to him at the end of the episode (his death).
character's age: 25

powers, skills, pets and equipment: Ianto will have the ability to turn water into any beverage of choice - wine, coffee, tea... that sort of thing. It will not always turn out perfect or drinkable, however, much to his annoyance.

canon history:

Ianto Jones, was born and raised in Cardiff - the second and youngest child of his family. His father was a shop keep and they were poor, but not exactly poverty stricken. His relationship with his dad was complicated from the start, he'd pushed him off a swing at the age of nine, breaking his leg. Ianto would later say, he always pushed him too hard and he resented him for it. They weren't close, and as all teenagers would - Ianto rebelled. He got caught shoplifting in his teens, smoked, drank and did things that most teens convinced that nobody understood them did. He got decent marks in school, but never really tried.

There is no information on his mother, but it is assumed that she was ill and died when he was young. At about the age of eighteen, following the death of his father and a fight with his sister directly after the funeral, he fled to London to seek his fortunes elsewhere. Of course, Ianto spent most of the time going from job to job, drifting about London with no real purpose before he got into Torchwood. The London branch needed researchers, and Ianto fit the bill. Young, impressionable, easy to mold into their ways. It was a short time after beginning there he met a girl, Lisa Hallet. Smart, beautiful and funny. They began dating, going camping on weekends off, couple-y things. And for a while, everything was okay. New, exciting job, friends, and a beautiful girlfriend who he loved very much.

Of course, everything went to Hell in a handbasket when the ghost shifts that Torchwood One had discovered turned out to be an army of Cybermen. And then, to top things off - the Daleks came via an object they had found, and the two waged war in the building. Over 800 people were in the office that day, only 27 survived. The rest, dead, converted or missing. Ianto was one of survivors, but it had been close. Lisa, was not so lucky. She had been in the Cyber converter (the Cybermen had brought a way to make their army even bigger - converting human bodies into Cybermen) when the Doctor managed to stop them, leaving her partially converted. Ianto grabbed her and fled the wreckage, hid her in an old warehouse.

Now the problem, what to do? Sneak her into Torchwood Three seemed the obvious answer - they had technology that he could use to find a way to save her, so after months of research on the base, he followed it's leader a one Captain Jack Harkness, and fought off a Weevil trying to get his attention. When that didn't work, he approached him with a cup of coffee and asked him for a job. It was unsuccessful. Of course, with the help of a Rift detection device he'd nicked from One, he tracked down a pteranodon. Jack showed up, and they managed to catch it, and Jack hired him on the spot.

During his first few weeks at Three, after managing to sneak Lisa and all of her equipment down into one of the abandoned rooms down below, Ianto kept to himself. The others barely noticed. He did paperwork, cleaned up after his coworkers, ran the cover up office, made coffee, tended to Jack and the Archives and Lisa. It went like that for a while, until he managed to find a Japanese specialist, familiar with the Cybermen. When the others went out to the pub, he invited the man into the Hub - and with his help they were able to get Lisa breathing without the machinery.

It turned into a bloodbath. Lisa wasn't herself anymore, and she tried to convert the man, thus killing him. She got lose, nearly killed Gwen, Jack was furious (and rightly so) and told Ianto if he didn't kill her, then he'd kill them both. The cyberwoman, sustained some damage - implanted her brain into a young pizza woman who was so unfortunately delivering the team their pizza. She didn't make it, and the others killed Lisa. However, for whatever reason, he didn't know - Jack let him stay alive, no retcon, no executing - just a month's suspension. After his return, he kept on the fringes of the team still, mostly still grieving silently to himself. It wasn't till a later incident - did Ianto finally start to come out more around the others, making jokes, and even going as far to proposition Jack for the first time since before the Lisa incident. Thus beginning their purely physical relationship.

When Jack and Tosh are taken by the Rift sometime later, Owen - still upset about the loss of a girl he'd met from the past that had gotten sucked into it, became determined to open it to get them back. The two fought, Ianto even shooting the doctor in the shoulder, however he still managed to open it allowing their teammates to return. Of course, the opening of the Rift was not a good idea, after all. Things started happening, all over. It looked like the end, and the team were tricked once again into thinking the only way to stop it was to open the Rift, Ianto visited by a vision of Lisa. Maybe they had to do it. Owen shot Jack and took the opportunity to open it once again. Jack didn't die, though. And it turned out, all they did was release something even worse upon the world.

Jack sacrificed himself to stop it, and died. Stayed dead for three days. Gwen kissed him, he came back to life. And disappeared while Ianto, Owen and Tosh popped out for coffee.

With Jack gone, it meant them being one man down. Gwen took control of the team, and the four of them worked together to make up for that lack of leadership. During this time, Ianto started to work out in the field as well as his other duties. This lasted until on a routine call and a chase with an alien blowfish, Jack returned. He was different, Ianto noticed. And even went as far as to ask Ianto out on a date, which he awkwardly accepted (in his defense, they were in the middle of something).

During the course of the season, Ianto continues to play a more active role in the team, going on missions and whatnot. His relationship with Jack continues, if he certainly weren't in love before Jack left - he probably is now.

Of course, when Gwen stumbles onto something that she wasn't supposed to know (a young man taken by the Rift, and she wants to find out what happened to him, and give closure to his mother), and refuses to drop it, no matter what Jack says - he takes action and leads her to the island of Flat Holm, where Jack has those who were taken, and brought back different - sick, or hurt or unable to be around people because of whatever happened to them. It ends up blowing up her face, but he had reasons for showing her. Jack couldn't shelter them forever.

After the death of Tosh and (second death of) Owen, it's down to the three of them, rebuilding the city, and carrying on. Months pass, they work on finding a new medic, Ianto begins to feel insecure about his relationship with Jack - and then something happens: the children stop. All of them, all over the world. It's bad, very bad - even worse when it turns out that someone wants Jack and the team out of the way - tries to blow them up via bomb implanted in Jack's stomach. Ianto at first refuses to leave, but after a searing kiss, Jack sends him and Gwen off and they escape just as it blows up. After rescuing Jack from the hands that tried to kill him in the first place, they flee to London and eventually, after watching the situation from their hideout in an abandoned warehouse through one of the workers and camera contact lenses - Jack and Ianto go to Thames House to confront the 456. It doesn't go to plan, though. They release a deadly virus into the air and lock all of the doors. After an emotional goodbye, Ianto dies in Jack's arms.

personality:

Ianto at first glance may come off as ordinary, someone much older than his twenty-five years in his bland exterior and well pressed suits. He may seem a butler, office boy, not someone out there, wielding a gun and helping to save the world from aliens. Yet that is his job, and has been for some time.

When he first joined Torchwood Three (after manipulating his way in in the first place through stalking, and basically throwing himself both literally and figuratively at Captain Jack Harkness for the job), he was silent, still seemingly shocked after the tragic events of Canary Wharf. He simply blended in the background, appearing only when needed for cleaning or making coffee and disappearing to clean, or tend to his Cybernetic girlfriend who he refused to believe was already gone until it was far too late. While he may have hid himself from the others, nobody had ever seen him truly until that point. His true emotions are always well hidden behind this same cool exterior or witty retort. It is safe to say that nobody really knows the true Ianto Jones, he did after all lie about his family life growing up, choosing to tell Jack that he grew up son of a master tailor. Out of shame, out of the fact that he was not close to his father growing up (pushed too hard, Ianto will say in the later series, in more ways than one).

Ianto has very little life beyond Torchwood. Because of the fact that it's not exactly a nine to five job, it leaves him with very little free time and whatever other time he has is probably spent with Jack. It also puts a serious damper on his relationship with his sister, which was already strained since he left for London after their father's death. It became more so after he began working for Torchwood in efforts to keep both family and work seperate but it also means that he doesn't see them beyond holidays or an occasional birthday, or have lots of contact with them a lot of the time. As for any other friends or acquaintances, well he doesn't have any.

After the final death of Lisa, he faked it. Pretended like he was coping when he really wasn't. Ianto prefers to hide his emotions under a facade, a sharp wit, quick sarcasm and his seemingly always un-phased attitude in many dire situations, which, in Torchwood is quite often. It wasn't until after the second death of a fellow employee, and over her dead body did he finally reestablish a relationship (purely physical, no strings attached) with Jack. His relationship with Jack is a big deal, very often is it described or taken at face value as "part time shagging", however despite knowing that Jack would not commit to him, Ianto allows himself to fall for the Captain, okay with only being "a blip in time" in the immortal's life. After that point, he continues to put himself out more, even sticking up against Owen and shooting him in order to keep him from doing something very stupid such as, opening the Rift.

Ianto is also the organized one of the team. Dogsbody, all around jack of trades - cleans, makes coffee, RetCons (memory erases) witnesses, drives the team, dumbs bodies, handles paperwork, cares for the pets and keeps the Hub and it's inhabitants from getting too out of control. He's clever and crafty - he did manage to sneak in his half cyberised girlfriend with next to no suspicion from the others, after all. Don't let the unassuming butler persona fool you, because he does have his James Bond moments. Oh, did I mention he looks good in a suit? Because he does. Like a certain other secret agent...

While his first, second and even third betrayals may say otherwise, Ianto is a very loyal person. He betrayed Jack and the team's trust because of his loyalty to his girlfriend and belief that she was the one who had been wronged by Torchwood and believed that the others should have seen it that same way. The second time, because he felt that opening the Rift would be the only way to stop the end of the world and the third because he felt that Jack setting Gwen down when she needed to know was the wrong way of handling so he took initiative and gave her the GPS that would lead her to discover the island of Flat Holm. It is also safe to say that even though Jack can't die, that Ianto would die for him, in a heart beat because while he can't die he can still feel pain and get hurt. Ianto has lost enough, lived through too much for someone so young. He knows and accepts that he will not live a long or full life, but is content to go down fighting and saving the world. He could very well long for a regular life or relationship, but Torchwood, has given him meaning.

Jack has given him meaning. While not everything is perfect, while he has still lived a lot for someone so very young and seen many a things that most people can only dream, and lost many friends to Torchwood, while he can still hide constant feelings of guilt, sorrow and uselessness he excepts this with the good that this life has brought him.

Despite a relationship with Jack, he does not consider himself a gay man, because Jack is Jack and to call himself that would mean putting a label on what they have and Jack has made him no promises, save for a couple of dates, close moments, hot steamy moments, and soul barring conversations, and really - he's fine with that.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?

Ianto is a very intelligent young man who is used to dangerous situations, he has worked and even died for while employed by an agency that handles all matters of life forms from other worlds. Murderous aliens, strange technology, Jack's driving...

Network Post Sample:

[The device is turned on. A young man in his mid twenties, run ragged gives it a once over and frowns. He'd read over the network somewhat, got some answers but it was still - somewhat confusing. Not to mention the earlier panic of waking up after he knew he had died. He knew it.. He still felt the same as he did before walking into that room. Before he breathed in that poison.] Guessing that the little light means it's recording. Either I'm missing a good couple hundred years or this isn't ... anywhere I'm familiar with. Not that I'm particulary well traveled or anything, but I hardly think I'm in London anymore.

Answers would be appreciated, if I'm not really standing here talking to open air and there is someone actually listening. I know this isn't where I was supposed to end up.

Like something a little more, I dunno... white, I suppose
. [Sigh. You do everything you're supposed to do in life, and for what, to get pulled off into some other strange place to do who knows what. Catching a break, never happened in life so why would it happen now?

Third Person Sample:

When the room had locked down and the sirens began to blare, Ianto remained calm. So much for that plan. Even as he emptied the chamber of his gun into the bullet proof tank and nothing happened, and he was aware that he was very likely breathing in very toxic fumes, he kept himself calm, pushing back everything else. It wasn't until Jack was dashing back into the room by his side, and saw the fear reflected in the other man's eyes did he truly realize that it was too late. They were trapped, and he was dying. Everyone in here, today as well would die. It wasn't as if he hadn't always known this would happen -- he recalled the disaster at One, and Tosh, and Owen. But now...

Suddenly, everything was slipping away. It was now just this room.

Ianto was suddenly grateful for the strong pair of hands that took hold of his arms, the only thing keeping him from falling face-first onto the floor in front of the tank. Jack's voice was yelling, pleading, with the aliens to spare him. If Ianto had the strength, he would've smiled. He would've told Jack he was fine, but it would be a lie and he knew it. They both did. His legs finally gave away underneath him, and suddenly Jack was there, lowering them both steadily to the floor. Jack was dying too, except he'd come back.

He'd come back from this and Ianto wouldn't. Jack would carry on the fight, and beat this too. He had to. Above him, Jack's face blurred, as tears stung his eyes.

" It's all my fault."

"No, it's not."

"Don't speak, save your breath." Jack admonished.

Despite the rapidly numb feeling taking hold, despite the air being snatched from his lungs almost impossibly fast, it felt important for Jack to know - if he didn't already, "I love you." What had begun as simple shagging, what had begun as something to pass the time between two lonely men had become something else entirely. It was why Ianto had stayed at Torchwood even after all that had happened. It was why he had followed Jack here today, why he had always followed him. "Don't."

Too late for that.

It didn't hurt, but he was tired. So very tired, and it was so tempting to give in and let go right now. Above him, he could hear Jack begging. "It was good, yeah?" he asked, voice small. They were both trying to be strong here, but it wasn't the time. "Yeah." Ianto would've smiled, if he could.

"Don't forget me." Jack would live forever. Ianto would just be one small second to the immortal but he could only hope he'd made some impact on his life. That he could think of him fondly, someday. Jack smiled. "Never could."

Liar.

"A thousand years time... you wont remember me." Just a blip in time, that's all.

"Yes, I will. I promise I will."

He'd tell him, not to blame himself, this wasn't his fault but suddenly he couldn't draw breath and the darkness in the corner of his mind was taking over everything. Ianto let it take over, and there was nothing.
